‘Tales of Malabar’, a project funded by the Dutch Consulate General and the Embassy, New Delhi, looked at the history of the Malabar region in India. This project payed homage to the idiosyncratic culture, history and rituals of the diverse people and religions of the Malabar region that were influenced by trade and cultural connections. For this project, a harmonious exhibit had to be created, that explained the history and culture of the Malabar region, designed especially for a travelling museum within Kerala, which meant that the final outcomes had to be easily transportable and storable.
India Song: Royal Procession
Illustration and Surface Design
Designing with Museum Archives was a project associated with the Tasveer Gallery and Museum of Art and Photography (MAP) in Bangalore, India. The task was to take inspiration from a piece of art from the gallery's archives and make a product or artefact that could be sold in the museum store.
My work was based on a series of photographs named “India Song" by Karen Knorr, a photographer born in Frankfurt, Germany.
The three things that stood out for me the most from Knorr’s photographs were the bright colours, the intricate detailing of the palaces and the use of animals in unlikely spaces. For my final product, I designed tableware with the animals of India, incorporating the intricate patterns and motifs used on the palace walls in to the illustrations. These were then coloured in using the bright colours of the forts and palaces. These illustrations were digitally printed on to fabric and embellished with machine embroidery.
